We work with governments to build and sustain high-quality, data-driven community health systems, and we advocate globally for all community health workers to be professionalized, which means they are trained, paid, supervised, and supplied.
Armed with the evidence from nearly 15 years of delivering community-based primary healthcare in Liberia, we have learned that community health worker programs must be prioritized nationally, financed, and managed to be successful.
We support governments to build strong community health systems by advocating at the global and national levels to mobilize political will and resources to strengthen health systems with trained, paid, supervised, and supplied community and frontline health workers. As a core partner in Africa Frontline First, we’re working in coalition to influence how $2 billion in sustainable funding is invested in community health programs across Africa.
Building strong national community health systems
In partnership with governments, we design and strengthen high quality, data-driven community health systems. Community health systems are programs and policies that guide teams of community and frontline health workers and health leaders to deliver high-quality primary health services directly in communities.
Our work targets critical levers to support high-performing health workers, including:
- Workforce Development & Education: We partner with governments to design training and supervision programs drawn on best practices in education and workforce development to improve the knowledge and skills of community and frontline health workers to enable greater performance.
- Governance: We support government partners to develop and strengthen policies strategies, and governance structures that promote consistent, high-quality, and adaptive community health programming.
- Digital Technology: Digital technology can accelerate all aspects of the community health system. We build technology solutions for community and frontline health workers to enable better training, supervision, data collection, and service delivery.
- Health Financing: We assist government partners to identify funding streams for their community health programs to ensure community and frontline health workers can be trained, paid, supervised, and supplied.
- Research and Analysis: We design community health program evaluations to assess and improve the effectiveness of these programs, and we share what we’ve learned globally.
Contributing to the global evidence base & movement for universal health coverage
We advocate to government partners and global organizations, such as the World Health Organization, for the adoption of best practices and policies in community health—from how to build national programs to how to pay for them. We achieve this by sharing lessons learned in designing, growing, and sustaining community health systems via research, thought leadership, and direct partnerships to inform global norms and policies, and by mobilizing diverse coalitions to call for increased investment in evidence-based community delivered healthcare.
We believe community and frontline health workers deserve an equal say in the decisions that affect their communities. We provide opportunities for them to advocate for greater investment in community health programs and influence policies.
This work is much bigger than one organization alone. We are proud to be part of a global movement to build stronger health systems that advance health for all.
