Carlos Velázquez is Last Mile Health’s Country Director for Sierra Leone, where he leads the country team in partnering with the Ministry of Health to strengthen the National Community Health Program via data-driven interventions and innovations in training, supervision, systems, and monitoring and evaluation. He brings over a decade of experience in international development, including program leadership roles on global health initiatives in West and Southern Africa. Most recently, he served as the Programme Manager for the $50 million Maternal Center of Excellence project in Kono District, with Partners In Health in Sierra Leone. His leadership contributed to a significant increase in maternal services and the establishment of operational models aligning with national health policies. Carlos has held prior roles in Sierra Leone, with CHAI and Concern Worldwide, and gained experience in managing programs, leading teams, developing policies, and overseeing budgets. He has a talent for creating clear plans and building strong working relationships with governments, peer NGOs, and local communities. With a background in journalism and communication, he’s also skilled at telling the story of the work and securing stakeholder buy-in. He holds a master’s degree in International Development from INESEM Business School and a master’s degree in English from the University of Brighton.
