“My mother is the main reason I work in healthcare,” says community health worker Workinesh Getachew. “She has been sick for as long as I can remember. I want to end her suffering.”
In a new short film made possible from the Skoll Foundation and the Video Consortium as part of their “Solutions Inside Out” series, Workinesh tells the story of how her mother’s illness has driven her career in community health in her home region of Oromia, Ethiopia. Every day, Workinesh dedicates her time to supporting pregnant women and new mothers, treating common illnesses in young children, giving immunizations, and more. Her story offers a glimpse into the transformative impact that’s possible when we invest in community health workers as professionals—in Ethiopia, and beyond.
